Case Study: Stress continued
Effects of stress

The effects of stress can be either positive or negative, this will depend entirely on how you choose to view the external pressure.

Positive Stress includes:

-    Increased physical, mental and emotional performance
-    Growth
-    Change
-    Creativity
-    Fun and enjoyment

Negative Stress includes:

-    Heart Disease
-    Cancer
-    Diabetes
-    Obesity
-    Illness and Injury
-    Burnout and Breakdown

The human body loves positive stress as it provides a stimulus for growth and improvement.

I m sure you are aware of many people who just seem to be cruising through life, just existing in the world. Well really all they are doing is not experiencing enough positive stress in their life. Unfortunately to not grow is to die and these people that you know are merely existing, just waiting to die.
The key to living an amazing life is to fill it with positive stress so that you are growing and developing continuously. Besides, when you look at the downside you can't afford not to.

Positive stress for some can be negative for others. This will depend on your stress threshold and the coping strategies you employ to deal with the stress.
To determine whether an event causes positive or negative stress you need to be aware of it's effect on your body. Exposure to too much stress for too long will reduce the ability of your immune system and will enhance your susceptibility to dis ease.

The first sign of any dis ease in your life is a good indicator that you have surpassed your stress threshold. As with all forms of dis ease, to address your stress you must first confront the underlying issue(s) causing it.
If these issues thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours are not dealt with then they can end up ruling our life and creating a self destructive, downward spiral. Which eventually will lead to burnout (exhaustion) or even a breakdown. A breakdown is simply experiencing too much stress in one or more aspects of your life for too long.

Identify your optimal level of stress

To obtain an optimal balance of stress in your life you should look to perform tasks that are not too relaxing and not to stressful but somewhere in between. If a task is too easy you will not become sufficiently aroused to produce a quality performance and if the task is too hard you will become over aroused, which will affect your ability to produce a quality performance. Becoming an expert in your own Stress Management is simply about putting yourself in situations that provide you with enough arousal to perform at your peak. For years sport psychologists have used the Inverted U principle to educate athletes on how to manage their arousal states.
