Many of my clients have PTSD stemming from childhood trauma and sexual abuse. In many cases, pain is associated with these traumas, though sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint---the pain is all over, shifts, moves, and is present on an ongoing basis. We have had steady success in collapsing the emotional charge around many specific incidents, and each time, I tune into the body, asking where the client feels it, and we are able to zero out the physical pain as well. In between sessions, however, the allover, shifting pain sometimes recurs in a stubborn way, and I wanted to really find a way to reduce or eliminate that pain. Here’s an approach that has become really effective in clearing out the pain. This works best with the movie technique, and is usually done after you’ve gently taken down the emotional intensity with the “tearless trauma” technique, followed by the “tell the story” technique---it can take several rounds or even a whole session or more to get a major sexual PSTD issue down to a place that is safe to go into with the movie technique---be alert to your client’s reactions and go very gently. But once the time is right, here’s how it has been working for me: First: identify the movie and give the crescendo moment a name—as in regular application of the movie technique. Link it to a SUDS level and to any emotions and physical symptoms in their bodies in the present.
Setup: ET I am still experiencing this XYZ Attack feeling, I deeply and completely love and honor myself. 2x ET I am still experiencing this XYZ Attach time, I deeply and completely love, forgive, and honor myself, and my young self. (1x) EB: This XYZ Attack feeling SE: This pain in my stomach (or wherever, of course) UE: This XYZ Attack time UN: All the pain today that may have any link to this attack CH: This XYZ Attack CB: This pain right now in my stomach UA: This XYZ Attack time Liver: All the pain and anger that have ever been linked to this time Head: This XYZ Attack and all the pain attached to it
Gamut: (I do the 9-Gamut about one time per session, and it is useful to do it when tying together a number of issues, as we’re doing here)
EB: This Attack SE: This sharp pain in my stomach (or wherever, of course) UE: This XYZ Attack time UN: All the pain today that is woven into this attack experience CH: This sad (or whatever the emotion is, checking with your client) XYZ Attack CB: This sharp pain right now in my stomach UA: This XYZ Attack experience Liver: All the pain allover (name the places, if available) that may be in any way linked to this incident and time Head: This XYZ Attack and all the pain attached to it
Second Sequence: ET I am still experiencing some of this XYZ Attack time, I deeply and completely love, forgive, and honor myself, and my young self, and choose to release this pain in my stomach now and any pain in my life that may be linked to this time. (3x) EB: This remaining XYZ Attack feeling SE: This little bit of pain in my stomach (or wherever, of course) UE: This remaining XYZ Attack time UN: Releasing all the pain today that may have any link to this attack CH: This remaining XYZ Attack CB: Releasing this pain right now in my stomach UA: This remaining XYZ Attack time Liver: Releasing all the pain and anger that have ever been linked to this time Head: Releasing in peace this XYZ Attack and all the pain attached to it
EB: This remaining Attack time SE: Releasing this remaining pain in my stomach (or wherever, of course) UE: This remaining XYZ Attack feeling UN: Releasing all the pain today that is woven into this attack experience CH: This remaining sad (or whatever the emotion is, checking with your client) XYZ Attack CB: Releasing this remaining pain right now in my stomach UA: This little bit of XYZ Attack experience Liver: Releasing now all the pain allover (name the places, if available) that may be in any way linked to this incident and time Head: Releasing gently this remaining XYZ Attack and all the pain attached to it
It is the “all the pain linked to,” “all the pain and anger woven into,” etc that is targeting the allover pain that is not specifically present all the time but that spikes between sessions. I have found it to be effective; it also gives a secondary positive byproduct---it continues to calm down the charge on the huge list of multiple incidents. This classic illustration of the “generalization effect” as Gary Craig calls it enhances my clients’ lives on a daily basis.
