When people want to bring about a change in their lives, they often find it much more difficult than they hoped. It seems they do all the right things to think good thoughts, focus on positive and follow through with action, and yet their dreams elude them. What’s that all about?

In every case I know of, the problem is that the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are not working in harmony. The conscious, thinking mind is mapping out all the plans and doing everything possible to bring the manifestation into fruition, but the subconscious mind is simply not on board. Worse still, the more effort put into forcing it to align with the conscious desires, the further away the dream moves! In short, the subconscious mind cannot be controlled by the conscious mind, and trying to make it comply is only reinforcing a state of conflict.

Dr. Joseph Murphy, in his book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, talks about a famous French psychologist, Emile Coue’, who purported “When your desires (conscious mind) and imagination (subconscious mind) are in conflict, your imagination invariably gains the day.” He named this “the law of reverse effort.”

He explains by showing how a narrow wooden plank, laid flat on the floor, is easily walked across. However, when the plank is placed twenty feet in the air, the task becomes much more difficult. It is the same plank and the same challenge, and yet, fear changes everything. He writes:

Your desire to walk the length of the plank would come into conflict with your imagination. You would imagine yourself toppling off the plank and falling a long way to the ground. You might very much want to walk across the plank, but your fear of falling would keep you from being able to do it. The more effort you put into conquering your imagination or suppressing it, the greater strength is given to the dominant idea of falling.

The thought “I will use my willpower to overcome my failure,” reinforces the thought of failure. Mental effort often leads to self-defeat, creating the opposite of what is desired. To focus on the need to exert willpower is to emphasize the condition of powerlessness. It is like deciding that you will do all you can not to think of a green hippopotamus. The decision makes the idea of a green hippo dominate the mind, and the subconscious always responds more to the dominant idea. Your subconscious will accept the stronger of two contradictory propositions.

Manifestation, when properly practiced, is always effortless. It comes from what some people call “being in the zone.” Thinking is minimal and feeling is optimal. It must be! If willpower is set upon it, it will fail. Why? Because the subconscious mind is a million times more powerful than the conscious mind, and trying to reason with it will never, ever work. Suggestions to the subconscious mind can only be introduced during a relaxed, drowsy, hypnotic-like state. More importantly, it must be accompanied with a feeling of grateful anticipation, as though the manifestation were already complete.

Murphy brings an interesting twist to a very familiar Bible verse:

If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:19)

Murphy suggests the two spoken of are the harmonious union of the subconscious and conscious mind! He says, “When there is no longer any quarrel between the different parts of your mind, your prayer will be answered.”

Science has now proven that heart-based feelings communicate with the field of Pure Consciousness. Bartering, begging, pleading, and speaking to Divine Mind are not direct lines to God. Our feelings are! If we pay close attention to what we are feeling, throughout the day, we will immediately know what we are asking for. If we are “asking” for sorrow, lack, disease, fear, guilt, anger or any other negative emotion, God cannot respond to that. The Source of goodness does not offer such things. However, if we lift our vibrations into the higher realms of Love, every good thing we want is immediately poured into our experience.

Many people say our entire bodies are the subconsious mind…we are the biology of our beliefs. If that is so, then we should be paying very close attention to what our bodies are saying to us. Wherever we have a problem, disease, or tension, we must note the connection to our beliefs and remove those blocks. We store our negative beliefs all over our bodies, and if we repress them long enough, they will ultimately emerge into our reality as some type of problem. On the other hand, we can also turn to the body as a communication source between ourselves and Pure Consciousness. When we feel inspiration through an expansion of love in our hearts, a lump in our throats, a tickle in the stomach, or an “ah ha” moment in the third eye chakra, we are, at long last, hearing the voice of God. Listen to the body…God is speaking through it constantly. As we align the subconscious mind to Divine Mind, our lives become the masterpieces they were always meant to be.

Every time we make one decision, a second, third, fourth, fifth, and countless others are made at the same time, because possibilities are unlimited. In this world, we only experience one at a time…the one we focus on. However, at any point, we can change our minds. If we do, we can call back one of the choices we originally discounted. How? We do it with our heart-based feelings…vibration. When we hold the image (unchallenged by the subconscious mind) of what we desire as “already done,” a vortex opens between one parallel universe to the next, and the new choice pours into this current reality. Nothing is more powerful than feeling intense gratitude for what we want as if we already have it.

When we are struggling to manifest our desires, we have a clear conflict between the conscious and subconscious mind. Funny thing is, these thoughts are nothing but our beliefs. We always have the option of changing what we believe, but we will never be able to do this by simply trying to talk ourselves into it. To reprogram a subconscious belief, we must be in a suggestive state of mind. We locate and remove the non-serving belief, and place a new, better-serving one in its place. For me, nothing works faster or more profoundly than the use of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). I’ve witnessed stunning changes in those who use it, and it is always remarkable to see how dramatically lives change once the two minds are acting as one. After congruency is achieved, the client can easily hold a new vision of themselves as if they already have what it is they desire, and quickly, it moves into alignment with this new vibration being offered.

If you are still struggling to manifest your goals and dreams, I suggest you take a good, hard look at your subconscious beliefs. More than likely, they are interfering with your desires. Mortal mind (ego) will not go gently into the good night. It will rage and wage war against Divine Mind. For far too long, it has been granted too much freedom in running your life, so asking it to step aside will require devotion and persistence on your part. I suggest you make a commitment to yourself…to follow through, in spite of what the world “out there” is telling you. If you do, you will be dazzled by your own empowerment.

In the end, what you will come to realize is that knowing who you are and by what authority you speak is the only thing you ever had to remember. Once you know…you will never again forget. The two minds give way to the One.
