I regularly give homework assignments to my clients and class participants only to find that some of them won't do the tapping in between sessions! Even after experiencing clear progress in the session or class, they get a strange form of amnesia and say "well, it didn't really work for me."

No matter how clear I am, how many word for word instructions I write down, there are still some people who are "resistant" to following through. This basic form of resistance might be present for a number of reasons such as fear of change, psychological reversal, oppositional behavior, or just feelings of being overwhelmed.

For therapists and EFT practitioners, the most important thing to remember is DON'T GET FRUSTRATED with your clients for being resistant! See it as simple feedback, or of course if you have already gotten frustrated, tap on it :)

We have all been (and will all be again) resistant about making changes in our lives. The trick is to accept the resistance and build it into the work. For non-practitioners, please be patient with yourself and use the EFT statements below to clear this issue. All of us need to accept this as much as any other hurdle in our work or personal life.

Below you will find EFT Setup Phrases followed by two rounds (one negative and one positive) for this newsletter's topic, Resistance to Doing EFT.

1. EFT SETUP PHRASES

The EFT SETUP Phrases for this topic are as follows:

While tapping the karate chop spot on either hand, repeat these phrases out loud, (or change the words to fit your exact situation).

"Even though I feel resistant to doing the tapping, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway."

"Even though I feel hopeless because nothing ever seems to work for me, I choose to accept that I don't want to do it."

"Even though I have been sabotaging my progress by refusing to do the tapping, I choose to accept whatever conflicts underlie my resistance."

I have indicated where to tap while saying each of the phrases below. You may repeat this round more than once if you wish. (Those of you who are new to EFT may view a chart of the spots on my web site under the EFT pages.)

***Now, for the phrases that focus on the problem***

Eyebrow: "I haven't been tapping and I don't know why."

Side of Eye: "I don't want to do the tapping."

Under Eye: "It seems like a waste of time."

Nose: "A part of me feels afraid to change."

Chin: "What if I do it wrong?"

Collarbone: "I refuse to do this silly tapping!"

Under Arm: "What if it works for everyone but me?"

Head: "I don't want to do it so leave me alone."

***Now for the positive focus on the solution***

Eyebrow: "I choose to accept myself even though I'm not tapping."

Side of Eye: "I love myself even though I won't do my homework."

Under Eye: "I choose to feel safe even if EFT scares me."

Nose: "I am ready to tap now even though I don't think it will work."

Chin: "I am ready to tap every day even if I don't like it."

Collarbone: "I appreciate the resistant parts of me and respect what they are trying to tell me."

Under Arm: "I'm glad my resistance is in the past now."

Head: "I can't believe how much I enjoy and look forward to the tapping!"

2. RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS:

I recommend that you follow the above positive round with a round of alternating statements, or what I call the "Yes/No" process. This shakes up your mind a little, but more importantly, it gives you a chance to say no and not feel controlled. I have seen it work wonders especially when there is resistance. Skip the karate chop point and start at the eyebrow point again. Tap through all of these statements at least once. There is one for each point from the eyebrow point to the top of the head.

"I refuse to do the tapping..."
"I love tapping..."
"I won't tap..."
"Yes I will..."
"No, don't make me..."
"I can't wait to tap..."
"I refuse to tap for you..."
"I choose to tap for me."

Another Recommendation...

Use the above tapping exercise while looking in the mirror. You may feel surprised by what new feelings come up, but try it and note your feelings.

A Repeat Recommendation...

I am repeating below the recommendation from my last newsletter. Obviously the Gratitude exercises are near and dear to my heart. Please try them and take note of any changes in your life that prove how powerful they are.

Since two of the most powerful exercises in my life have been the Gratitude Walk and the Gratitude List, both listed in my e-book, "Attracting Abundance with EFT," I am recommending that you keep a Gratitude List in a special journal for yourself this month.

Every day, morning noon or night, write a short list of everything you feel grateful for or what you appreciate. (Yes, it is just another version of the Gratitude Walk I recommended in my last newsletter.) Writing down what you feel grateful for is incredibly powerful. If you only had time for one extra technique a day, I would recommend this one. Purchase a special notebook for this exercise to communicate respect to yourself and for the process. You may spend anywhere from 3-30 minutes on your list. Make it real, and enjoy the momentum of positive energy.

The only rule to this abundance game is as follows:
