“Contrary to what many people think, it is not the thing that is believed in that brings an answer to a person’s prayer.  Prayers are answered when the individual’s subconscious mind responds to the mental picture or thought in his or her mind.”

–Dr. Joseph Murphy, D.R.S., Ph.D, D.D., L.L.D.–

Studying the subconscious mind is fascinating.  It is in that part of the brain we store our beliefs.  There is such extraordinary power in our beliefs–if we don’t “believe” that, then we should spend just a moment imagining how life would be without them!  We would be observers, only.  While merely observing is extremely important during times when we are experiencing negative feelings, the power of positive beliefs is one that serves us well.

More and more, science is starting to recognize the amazing healing power that lies within.  There are so many testimonies that confirm the biology of the body responds to the beliefs we hold.  But what exactly happens?

Madame Bire, who was blind with optic nerves atrophied, decided to take a trip to Lourdes, years ago, after hearing story after story of miraculous healings that took place there.  She visited the shrine with urgent expectancy and great faith.  In her heart, she absolutely believed she would be healed.  Shortly after the visit, that is exactly what happened…she regained her sight!  The doctors who examined her later testified that her optic nerves, initially, were still useless; and yet, she saw!  A month later, however, a second exam found the nerves had been fully restored to normal.  How did this happen?  Is it nothing more than a supernatural miracle?

When looked at on a deeper level, it is clear that miracles are not so miraculous after all.  They are the result of applied techniques.  Most people have no awareness of exactly what they are doing, but in each case, there is a common cause.  The healing principle within the subconscious mind responds to the nature of the thought.

Because the subconscious mind is mechanical in nature, it does not argue with the programs installed there.  Whatever belief is planted there is accepted as absolute truth.  It takes us at our word, literally.  It also plays out the belief as though it is happening in the present moment.  It knows no other time…no past or future.  As a belief is triggered in the subconscious mind, signals go out to the body that release chemicals into the system.  The cells quickly get the message that healing is imminent.  Everything lines up to produce evidence that this belief is so…no questions asked.  All ideas that match that belief are called to the front and center to aid in manifesting a prompt response.  So long as opposing beliefs are not introduced and accepted, the original one controls the outcome.

When working to heal oneself, the outcome is always the ONLY focus.  We should NOT focus on the problem at hand unless we are doing so to remove a pre-existing belief (as we do with EFT).  The idea is to hold an image of perfection with grateful anticipation and expectation.  Why?  Because the vision of seeing oneself as whole and healthy will be accepted by the subconscious mind as true.  If the subconscious mind is repeatedly told “I am healthy and whole,” it does not question that perception.  Add to that, visions of the body in that state of health, and the subconscious has no reason to doubt that is exactly what is true.  It activates all the needed biological processes as it executes a plan for healing.  It is extremely obedient!

The reason this does not happen for most people, however, is because they have conflicting beliefs.  The conscious mind may “want” to be healed–and it may say exactly that to the subconscious mind–but the lingering doubts are sabotaging the healing.  The very thought of “wanting” something suggests it is currently absent.  If the person comes from a place of lack or disease, that is what is matched.  This is why I often say it is next to impossible to come to that place with faith alone.  One needs understanding to prove to themselves the expectation is not only possible, but probable.  In every case of miraculous healing I’ve witnessed, the person healed was fervently embracing the vision of health.  No doubt was evident.  By rejecting all other beliefs, and practically demanding healing, a miracle happened.

If these steps have been followed to no avail, then conflicting beliefs are the only reason it doesn’t work.  Doubt has reared its ugly head!  There is no need to go from one healing mode to another to another, always seeking some sort of miracle.  None of them will work as long as doubt is held as the predominant feeling.  Rather than seek another healer to work on the same old problem…heal the unbelief!

Unfortunately, this also works with negative beliefs…beliefs that we are sick or damaged.  We need to pay close attention to the instructions we are giving the subconscious mind.  Remember…it doesn’t decipher whether or not we actually “mean” it.  It gives us exactly what we ask for…and that isn’t always in our best interest!

Dr. Murphy shares just such an example in this story:

For many years I gave a regular series of lectures at the London Truth Forum in Caxton Hall, which I founded a number of years ago.  Dr. Evelyn Fleet, the director, told me about a man whose young daughter suffered from both crippling rheumatoid arthritis and the disfiguring and painful skin condition called psoriasis.  They tried many treatments, but nothing the doctors did seemed to help.  The father was near despair.  Over and over he said, to himself and to his friends, “I would give my right arm to see my daughter cured.”

According to Dr. Fleet, one day the family was out for a drive.  Their car was involved in a head-on collision.  The father’s right arm was torn off at the shoulder.  When he came home from the hospital, he discovered that his daughter’s arthritis and skin condition had vanished.

This is why it is so important to be careful to only give positive suggestions to the subconscious mind…ones that bless, heal, inspire, validate and elevate.  When a negative statement is thought or said, it must be immediately corrected and redirected.

The mental picture held in the mind is what brings about healing.  This picture should always be one of health and wholeness.  Over and over, this image must be practiced and repeated.  If we continue to see ourselves in a state of dis-ease, that is exactly what is returned to us.

More than all this, it is so important to remember the Source of our well-being is omnipresent.  We tend to forget that when we face illness or hard times.  We marvel at the Divine Intelligence which created the body temple, and yet, when it falls victim to disease, we somehow forget that which created it undoubtedly also knows how to return it to perfect health.  The ability to do so is not placed outside our reach; it is within us, always.  All we need do is ask.

Dr. Murphy shares a story of a minister in South Africa who called on God to ignite the healing within his subconscious mind for his own miraculous healing.  The minister knew he had to convey, with firm belief, his perfect health, so his subconscious mind would return him to just such a state.  Several times a day, he would sit quietly and bring his mind and body into a state of complete relaxation.  Once there, he affirmed:

“The perfection of God is now being expressed through me.  The idea of perfect health is now filling my subconscious mind.  The image God has of me is a perfect image, and my subconscious mind recreates my body in perfect accordance with the perfect image held in the mind of God.”

Heal your unbelief.  For with God, all things are possible.
